Winter Blues

Thursday, December 22, 2016

The winter season is upon us and while many of you may be submitting your “cuffing season applications” others like myself are preparing to not be a victim of “winter Blues” or “cabin fever”. If you're confused, winter blues is when you experience seasonal depression caused by gloomy weather and lack of ability to go out. So here’s 5 simple things to do to beat the Blues.

  1. DIY projects. Paint that statement wall in your living room that you told yourself you didn’t have time for. Make it fun. Play music that makes you feel good, Invite friends over and have a paint and sip. Revamp your kitchen or bathroom with peel n’ stick backsplash, a non-permanent option for renters or indecisive people like me. You can purchase from Home depot with prices ranging from $12-$50 per package. If you’re looking to do something more budget friendly aka FREE, you could never go wrong with cleaning out your closet, not like Eminem. Sort through your wardrobe, decide what stays, what gets donated and what’s trash. Whatever you keep that’s out of season, store away. Whatever you keep that’s in season, mix and match those pieces and style on’em this winter. For more DIY inspiration [Apartmenttherapy.com ]is my go-to site.
  2. Listen to music. Turn on your favorite song/album and play it hundred times. Make sure you sing..loud. Learn the words so at the next party you attend you can sing or rap along and show off. Apps Like Tidal and Pandora have a broad musical selection and playlist easily accessible with the click of a button, but if you're in to automatic payment deductions or simply trying to conserve space on your phone. Soundcloud is a FREE option for you to listen to anything from the soothing sounds of violins to a Dj hyping you up to twerk to the beat. I've provided a link to a [playlist] a friend of mine created, inspired by Art Basel.
  3. Plan a vacation you want to take when the weather breaks. Look up flights, get that group chat poppin’, see who’s interested, and calculate the cost. Or consider a staycation. Grab a friend and take a road trip to a near by city or state that you've never been to. Stay the night at a hotel, and explore the city. Ask the front desk about the most popular bars, or best restaurant recommendations.  Make it memorable Take plenty of pictures and snapchat or instasnap your experience, after all it doesn't count if it's not on the Snap, right?
  4. Exercise. Stay active get that blood flowing and those endorphins going. Even if it means you’re just bussin’ a whine. Dancing counts! I've been wanting to take a cycling class at soul cycle and they're reasonably priced! If you're not into gym memberships considering using a guest pass at a gym a friend or relative is a member of and take a class with them. It might take away that chore like feeling of working out.
  5. Get fresh air. Don’t just open the window. Go outside and inhale some of that crisp winter air. If your dad or bae shoveled the walkway, don’t let it be in vain. Go take a 5-10 min walk.
